In 2008 the Oak Park-River Forest Orchestra granted him the “Horban” prize for his composition “Alegoría Yaki”. His most recent work for orchestra and choir entitled “Revolucionarios” is dedicated to Mexico’s Independence Bicentennial and Centennial of the Revolution and is expected to be premiered in Mexico, as well as in the United States in 2010. Pichardo is a member of the Chicago Latino Composers and his works are presented at the annual cycle of the Chicago Latino Music Festival.

Victor Pichardo has been awarded several times with the Fellowship Award by the State of Illinois (1998, 2004, 2008) and in 2009 he was nominated as Chicago Community Hero by the LISC organization for his contribution to education and arts.

Victor Pichardo is a Mexican composer born in Mexico City and he is currently living in Chicago Illinois. He has thirty years of experience as a folklorist. He has studied ethnomusicology and has a bachelor degree in Music Composition.
He is a pupil of Maestro Arturo Márquez. Pichardo founded the folkloric group Zazhil and toured with them extensively through Mexico, Europe and South America and recorded ten albums. He was also musical conductor of the deceased Mexican singer Amparo Ochoa. He is currently conductor of the music band Sones de México, a group from Chicago with which he has been nominated twice to the prestigious Grammy Awards. Sones de México has also made important collaborations with organizations such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Sinfonietta, the Silk-Road Project lead by cellist Yo-Yo-Ma, the Lincoln Center in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and the Smithsonian Institute.
Revolucionarios
It is a three movement cantata for choir and orchestra and it depicts musically and poetically the dramatic historical moments of the Mexican Independence and Revolution. This work is based on the musical tradition of the Huapango Arribeño and has an approximate duration of thirty six minutes. |
