MUSIC FOR PEACE
2011 MARCH EVENTS
AGENDA

This month I pay tribute to Lennart Winnberg, Swedish musician and educator, who died in Mexico City on March 17, 2008. It was an unannounced death. Lennart came to Mexico, as he did since 2003, to give his workshop: From ear to heart: the easy way to make music. Those of us who had the fortune to know him, thought he would last many years, we wanted to learn more about him.

Largely thanks to Lennart and Anna-Karin Olsson, his wife and my Swedish sister, I am here to promote music and music education with the firm belief that the development of education and culture in general and particularly that of music is the way to a life free of violence, more harmonious, with tolerance and respect towards each other. I owe to them my love and my knowledge for music, as well as to Ana Patricia Carbajal, Director of the Choral Ensemble and president of the Civil Association Voce in Tempore, my friend and guide. From my personal experience I can say that simply joining a choir or a musical group or orchestra, singing along with other voices, making music, is the way to learn to listen to others, to feel the harmony and understand the value of respect and tolerance.

Lennart said that optimal learning occurs in a context that is not threatening in any way, where students feel secure and safe knowing that the teacher trusts and cares deeply about them. He called this area the "pedagogical arena." I extend the above to the society. Also the individual should believe in their own abilities and possibilities for their personal development, with more and better opportunities. A person who trusts in their leaders and their environment, finds the means to achieve their objectives and implement their knowledge and values for the benefit of the society. All what makes us feel insecure, often creates a feeling of discomfort that we want to avoid at all costs.

In 2011 we seek to consolidate as the first artists' management agency in Mexico. Through alliances with other agencies in Mexico and worldwide, in 2011 Continuo Representación Artística will bring more and better opportunities to Mexican artists, and open doors in Mexico to foreign artists.

In these times of social pressure, fear, violence, corruption and impunity, wefeel insecure, fearful. Especially youngsters. Not in vain we hear phrases like: "Why study, who knows if I will get a job?" "Why should I prepare? It's better to have pals, and money in the pocket." Why are there so many youngsters that neither study nor work? What are they doing? What will our children do, those who have enjoyed a well-off position and have been able to attend college: stay in Mexico, or search for safer and better opportunities abroad?

Young people and many of us keep silence: we fear repression and we are certain that we will not be heard, but we know that in a peaceful atmosphere, Mexico could be a better and stronger country. It is true that there is much that the government should do, but also each one of us can and should act. Lennart said, "If we create a pedagogical arena that inspires us, if we find our own resources and qualities, if we provide an atmosphere of openness, joy and sense of solidarity that makes the students feel welcome and heard, they will find the motivation needed to move forward, to learn to learn, learn to listen and respect others, to share their learning with others and live in harmony. "

My struggle is to foster social culture and music education, to assist and promote Mexican and foreign musicians who can reach the soul of those who allow themselves to listen and feel. From this arena I ask, I demand on behalf of many Mexicans, the establishment of cultural, sports and recreation centers; to promote culture and quality education; that our musicians are given recognition for their artistic projects; a fair pay for the activity each one of us carries out. I demand this to governments, to employers, to each one of us Mexicans. I demand it every day to myself.
