Maryland Seisiún is a group with one thing in
common: Irish traditional music. Nowadays, it is very common that Irish sessions are performed by professional musicians or by mixed groups of amateurs and professionals. They usually gather around the world in Irish pubs, places that somehow represent the Irish lifestyle.
Maryland Seisiún regularly plays in Maryland, therefore the name, and they plan a trip to Mexico soon. As you can hear in the audio samples, the members of the band play the fiddle (or violin), the uilleann bagpipes, the banjo, the open holed Irish wooden flute, the tin wihistle, the bouzouki, the guitar, the harmonica, the anglo concertina, the Irish button accordion and the bodhrán, a drum that is played with a small wooden stick called a tipper. We will soon dislpay some photographs of the instruments on this page. The representing group of Maryland Seisiún have an interesting variety of musical backgrounds. Some of them grew up with Irish music, some come from other folk traditions or have been involved in jazz or reggae music. All of them have been playing Irish traditional music for many years. The diversity and versatility of this group flourishes in the great freshness and vitality of their playing.
